You'll be on the edge of your seat, wondering if they're going to nail that crazy lift or just launch into orbit. And trust me, the 'Lezginka' will have your feet tapping so hard, you'll wear out your shoes!
A Cultural Cocktail This ballet's got more cultural layers than a baklava!
I've mixed in a little bit of everything: Armenian folk, classical vibes, and even a pinch of jazz for that extra zing. It's like a musical UN conference where everyone gets along and decides to throw a dance party. And the best part? No translators needed — the language of 'Gayane' is universal! Having gained a brilliant education in Tbilisi, Gayane led an intensely productive life.
She had almost no other interests. The tiny payments she received for her paintings she often distributed to needy families, continuing to live more than an ascetic life, never thinking about material goods, sleeping on the floor. And in such conditions she used to create her colorful, vivid, imaginary worlds, the street masquerades with the colorings of Agulis and Tiflis, her mysterious, yet simultaneously simple and ordinary characters.
We met her on the street; she was going to the empty shop with an empty bag. We saw marvelous paintings from which we could not move away. In general, Gayane Khachaturian has been officially recognized only recently, but Seryozha had discovered her long time ago. She is a little bit not from this world and is like Novella Matveeva [Russian poet].

After its premiere in Perm, Anisimova twice restaged Gayane for the Kirov and after revision, the version stands as the definitive version of Gayane. In the end, Nina Anisimova proved that character dancing endures and should be included in the world of classical ballet. The dance in Gayane did not follow the Petipa tradition, for example Swan Lake , wherein the audience is treated to national dance in discrete divertissements of "dances of le salon", in Petipa's words; in contrast, the dance in Gayane , by force of character, is felt throughout the ballet; it is a natural part of the people and of their history.
Gayane is an excellent example of character dance and ballet combined; its artistic value to twentieth-century Soviet choreography is significant.
For concert performance Khachaturian arranged three orchestral suites drawn from the score. Published in , these became very popular. Stanley Kubrick's film A Space Odyssey featured one of the less up-tempo sections of the Gayane third suite the Adagio. It has also been used in numerous other movies, TV shows, and video games.
Because of its feverish tempo, the music has long been a staple of novelty acts such as plate twirling. Contents move to sidebar hide. Article Talk. Read Edit View history. Tools Tools. Download as PDF Printable version. In other projects.
