By , they were filling Carnegie Hall, and their hugely popular tour of Ireland in sparked a revival of interest in traditional Irish ballads, but later drew criticism that they had commercialised the music.

Tours of Australia, Canada and the UK followed, and they sold millions of albums during the s. By the end of the decade, Makem left the group and was replaced by Bobby Clancy, but in they eventually disbanded. Liam had left the group in and settled in Alberta, Canada to escape bankruptcy. There, he resurrected his career with his own TV show.

He reunited with Tommy Makem in , and for the next 13 years, they performed as a duo, recording half a dozen albums together. But it was difficult to make a living as an actor, and singing took over. Clancy was reunited with Makem in New York. Along with Makem, and his brothers Pat and Tom, in he recorded The Rising of the Moon , an album of republican ballads.

Now performing as a group, they built up a following through live performances in Boston, Chicago and New York. Under the shrewd management of Marty Erlichman and Lenny Rosenfeld, the Clancys went from strength to strength. Dressed in Aran sweaters and belting out songs with great gusto, they broke from the standard Irish-American repertoire, and introduced songs like Jug of Punch, Shoals of Herring and Leaving of Liverpool to young folk audiences.

In he left the group to pursue a solo career. He dabbled in writing and painting, but his true passion was theater. It was through his involvement in theatrical productions that he began calling himself Liam instead of William. At a young age, Liam founded a local theater society that still operates today.

In Dublin, he performed in productions at the Gaiety Theatre. In his youth, Liam met Diana Hamilton-Guggenheim when she visited his mother in Carrick, and in , he embarked on a tour of Ireland with her. Diana helped the Clancy brothers establish the 'Tradition Records' label. Tommy, who was a singer in an Irish dance group, later joined them.

Liam's older brothers, Tom and Paddy, had already moved to New York.
