Biography for kids video: Héctor García-Molina (November 15, – November 25, ) was a Mexican-American computer scientist. He was a Professor in the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University.

    But equally so, Hector Garcia-Molina is a photographer. He takes after his father, who was also a college professor in Mexico who took on photography as a serious hobby on the side. Over the years, the elder Garcia-Molina took thousands of photos and even purchased his son a camera to capture his interest. Give me a second, let me have a few of them!

    Although it was a completely unfamiliar area and the learning curve was steep, months of hard work from Garcia-Molina proved fruitful; he was able to not only resurrect decades of family memories that he was able to share, but also gain valuable firsthand experience working with photos that only furthered his interest and gave him better technical ability in the field.

    In Photoshop, I could fix a lot of that, and I started building up a collection of family photos in much better shape.

    It was a challenge to get things in focus and get the right moment. That initial foray into sports photography piqued his interest, and on his next outing, he was in the stands of a Stanford athletic matchup taking photos from the stands. It eventually became a regular pastime of his, and when the other volunteer photographers at StanfordPhoto.

    Not only would Garcia-Molina have the chance to showcase his work on a larger stage under the banner of Stanford Athletics, but he would also be able to go to whatever events he wanted and take photos whenever he wanted, giving him a formal outlet for his passion.

  • He has since firmly established himself as one of the most talented sports photographers on that staff. Jeffrey Ullman, now a professor emeritus of computer science at Stanford, was on the Princeton faculty in when Garcia-Molina assumed his post there. Many years later, after Ullman moved to Stanford and later became chair of the Department of Computer Science, he helped bring Garcia-Molina back to campus.

    He has a remarkable 37 papers with or more citations. In the mids, Garcia-Molina together with now emeritus professor Terry Winograd launched the Stanford Digital Libraries Project, a year effort to develop ways to capture, store and filter the many types of information held in traditional libraries. Early student researchers on that project included Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who co-founded Google.
