What is a author biography: Julius Bernard Lester (January 27, – January 18, ) was an American writer of books for children and adults [1] and an academic who taught for 32 years (–) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The need to know more about my individual past led me to begin studying slavery, and once I did, my interest grew and I became intrigued by the challenge of trying to imagine what it was like to have been a slave. I wanted to communicate to others that those we call slaves were really human beings, human beings pretty much like us.
I suppose I write because I have some questions I need answers to, and the only way I know to find the answers is to write my way into them.
